Lots of beginners focus mainly on learning chess openings and gets frustrated if their opponent does not follow the moves written in books. Usually, the Middle game in chess is disregarded, but it is the one that can assist make up for a lack of knowledge on openings and can provide the edge in the Endgame.

So what is the Middle game in Chess? Typically, the Middle game is part of a chess game right after completing the Opening. For example, once the player has developed his/her pieces, Knights and Bishops, the King has already castled and the Rooks have a line of sight in the back row. The player now has a solid foundation on positioning the pieces for, defense or attack, if he/she prefers.

The player can practice the Middle game by means of playing chess versus a computer, which set in a low skill level. The player can commence from the start of the chess game or if he/she is utilizing a program such as Fritz, the player must begin from the last part of a chess Opening from its database.

Then, the player must focus only a single chess square, somewhere that is close to the King of the opponent. The player’s goal is to control this square by either occupying it or threatening it with a minimum of two chess pieces. While at the same time not permitting the opponent to occupy or attack the square.

In moving the pieces, the player must make sure that no chess piece is being left unprotected. The player must also try to not be drawn from his/her objective by unnecessarily taking an opponent’s piece.

Through this, the player will acquire a habit of planning on how to maneuver the chess pieces with an objective in mind.

The goal in playing chess is to checkmate the King of the opponent, but before getting into this point, the player needs to reach many mini goals. Also, achieving this goal can be done in several ways. This is why chess middle game strategy as well as tactics is also very important. If each time the player would play the same way, the chess game will be predictable and he/she will lose easily. Therefore it is important to vary the moves in each play. To achieve this, the player must have a plan. Once the player learns the ways of successfully controlling a single square, he/she can try controlling two squares. Starting from this point, he/she will be able to move in order to control a square from where to attack the opponent’s King.
